Pupils of the agricultural class of the school in the village of Gorny Shield are conducting an experiment. To increase the harvest, they grow potatoes not from a tuber, but from a test tube.
Pupils of school number 142 in the village of Gorny Shield found a way to improve the quality and volume of the crop. First, they grow seedlings of potatoes from tiny sprouts in the school laboratory, and then transplant them into the open ground. Moreover, for the experiment, potatoes of varieties developed in Yekaterinburg are used – “Irbitsky”, “Shah”, “Aluet”, “Mishka”.
If a sprout grows on a tuber, agronomists say, it takes over all the viruses that were in the mother plant. And due to pathogens that are found in the soil, up to 25 viruses can accumulate in potatoes grown in the usual way. “Tube potatoes” do not have this risk: for it, the uppermost part of the sprout is cut off, which is then grown on a nutrient medium until it is ready for transplanting into the ground.
Schoolchildren will sum up the results of the experiment in September, when it will be possible to shoot and evaluate the harvest.
