Prices of UK white potatoes have soared to unprecedented levels for the second year running, as reported by the price monitoring service Mintec. The Mintec Benchmark for English white potatoes surged to a record £750 per tonne on June 11, marking an 87.5% increase from the previous year. Mintec’s Harry Campbell noted the impact of climate change on these price hikes, with growers showing reluctance to commit their produce due to the higher free-buy prices.
Supplies are anticipated to remain scarce until the maincrop harvest in mid-July for English white potatoes, leading to elevated prices as growers struggle with empty stores and delayed harvests. Delays in planting and unfavorable weather conditions have hindered crop growth, further exacerbating the situation.
In light of these challenges, the National Farmers Union (NFU) issued a warning about the adverse effects of weather, input costs, and trade on the potato crop. The NFU urged political intervention to address the reported delays in crop lifting and planting, coupled with soaring input expenses like fertilizers and energy costs. The cumulative production costs in the sector have surged by 28% over the past two years, posing significant challenges for potato growers.
