On April 9, 2024, a pivotal shift was witnessed in Uganda’s agricultural landscape, particularly within the potato value chain. This transformation, spearheaded by Kilimo Kisasa Limited, not only revolutionized potato farming practices but also laid the foundation for a sustainable and prosperous future for Ugandan farmers.
Potatoes, renowned for their nutritional value and economic potential, have long been a staple crop in Uganda. However, the demand for high-quality potatoes, particularly Dutch varieties, has been on the rise, driven by the processing industry’s preference for these varieties in products such as French fries and crisps.
Traditionally, Ugandan farmers faced challenges in accessing Dutch potato seeds, leading to costly imports from countries like the Netherlands and Kenya. The prohibitive costs often rendered these seeds unaffordable for local farmers, hindering their ability to meet the rising demand for Dutch potato varieties.
Enter Kilimo Kisasa Limited, a game-changer in Uganda’s agricultural sector, especially in Zombo district. With a mission to address the escalating demand for high-quality seed potatoes, Kilimo Kisasa embarked on a journey to transform Uganda’s potato value chain.
Established as the sole recipient of mini-tubers of Taurus and Sagitta varieties from HZPC Holland B.V., Kilimo Kisasa differentiated itself by offering disease-free Dutch potato seeds at competitive prices. By focusing on popularizing these varieties among local farmers, Kilimo Kisasa not only reduced the financial burden on growers but also contributed to lower shipment emissions through local multiplication.
However, Kilimo Kisasa’s impact extends beyond mere seed provision. In collaboration with the Embassy of the Netherlands, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, and other stakeholders, Kilimo Kisasa initiated a comprehensive project aimed at developing the value chain of Dutch potato varieties in Uganda.
Through farmer training programs, establishment of efficient payment systems, and continuous evaluation of farmer feedback, Kilimo Kisasa and its partners are paving the way for sustainable potato cultivation practices in Uganda. This collaborative effort not only enhances food security but also uplifts the economic well-being of farmer households.
In essence, Kilimo Kisasa’s innovative approach marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s agricultural journey. By prioritizing sustainability and inclusivity, Kilimo Kisasa has not only transformed the potato value chain but has also set the stage for a brighter, more resilient future for Ugandan agriculture.
