We continue to publish the material of the seminar on methods for assessing the quality of seed potatoes (sampling, tuber analysis, diagnostics of pathogens).
An important place should be given to variety change and variety renewal.
To maintain potato production at a high yield level while maintaining the economic and biological properties of the variety, it is necessary to carry out variety renewal and variety change.
Variety renewal or seed renewal-replacement of seeds, which in the process of reproduction in production have worsened their varietal qualities.
When growing potatoes in tubers from generation to generation, pathogens of viral and bacterial diseases accumulate, which
cause a sharp decrease in yield up to complete degeneration
varieties. To maintain the productivity of the variety, you need seeds through
to replace a certain time of reproduction with new ones, of the same variety
higher reproduction.
The frequency of varietal renewal in different zones is different and depends
from many factors.
A variety change is the replacement of one variety with another, which should be
better than the previous one in productivity and other economically valuable properties. It is believed that the new variety should be superior in yield
old varieties.
The multiplication factor of seed potato tubers is low,
therefore, the replacement of one variety by another is considered normal within
five to seven years. During this breeding period of a new variety, it is possible to establish the suitability of its cultivation in large areas and to correct the cultivation technology. The main thing at this stage is to keep it in a healthy state, avoiding mechanical clogging and
re-infection with diseases.
