In U.S. households, fresh potatoes are more than just a dinner table staple—they are a crucial driver of sales for produce departments nationwide. According to the latest sales data, potatoes rank as the top-selling fresh vegetable by volume, showing remarkable growth and market resilience. As consumers seek versatility, value, and nutrition, potatoes continue to hold a strong position in American kitchens, making up 9.7% of all produce pounds and 21.1% of all vegetable pounds in stores across the country.
Record-Breaking Sales and Volume Growth
Over the past year, potato sales have surged, generating an impressive $4.4 billion in revenue. Potatoes consistently rank among the top five fresh produce categories by dollar sales, even in a competitive market of 130 produce categories. Compared to the pre-pandemic period of June 2018–2019, the period from June 2023 to July 2024 saw an increase of $1.3 billion in potato sales. Additionally, consumers bought 322 million more pounds of potatoes than before the pandemic, marking this period as the second-highest volume of potato sales in six years.
This surge is partly due to consumer preference for fresh, versatile vegetables that fit various culinary needs. Potatoes can be prepared in countless ways, from roasting and frying to mashing and baking, appealing to a broad range of tastes and dietary preferences.
Household Penetration and Potential for Market Growth
One standout factor in potato sales is their extraordinary household penetration—85.2% of U.S. households purchase potatoes, with the average household buying them almost 11 times annually. This level of market penetration positions potatoes not only as a kitchen mainstay but as a reliable revenue generator for retailers. As Nick Bartelme, Global Marketing Manager of Retail for Potatoes USA, points out, the potential for growth remains high. “If just half of the households that currently purchase potatoes were to make one additional purchase per year, it could drive a potential $218 million in sales and 231 million extra pounds, significantly impacting the market,” Bartelme noted.
This insight offers a compelling opportunity for retailers and growers. By increasing purchasing frequency, even by a single additional purchase annually, retailers could see substantial gains. Given the extensive household reach and frequency of purchases, potatoes have the potential to further enhance retailer profits and support farmers in meeting this demand.
Potatoes as a Retail Powerhouse
For produce departments, potatoes have proven to be a reliable, year-round seller. Despite economic pressures, they maintain steady demand thanks to their affordability, long shelf-life, and versatility. The increased sales reflect the broader trend of consumers gravitating towards staple foods that offer good value and multiple uses. This trend benefits both retailers, who see increased revenue from high-volume potato sales, and growers, who gain from consistent, strong demand.
The rise in potato sales underscores the vegetable’s importance to both retailers and consumers. As a top-seller in produce departments, potatoes not only contribute significantly to retail success but also present ongoing growth potential. With even a modest increase in purchasing frequency, potatoes could drive millions in additional sales, benefiting both the retail sector and farmers. For retailers, encouraging just one more potato purchase per household annually could yield significant returns, while for consumers, potatoes will continue to be a versatile and valuable kitchen staple.
