Swiss Rösti - Switzerland

Here’s a recipe for Swiss Rösti:

Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and grated
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter or vegetable oil
  • Optional: Fresh herbs (such as thyme or rosemary) for added flavor

Instructions:

  1. Grate the Potatoes: Use a box grater to grate the peeled potatoes into a large bowl. You can use a kitchen towel to squeeze out any excess moisture from the grated potatoes.
  2. Add Onion and Seasoning: Add the finely chopped onion to the grated potatoes. Season with salt and pepper according to your taste. If you like, you can also add some fresh herbs for extra flavor.
  3. Mix Well: Toss the grated potatoes, onion, and seasoning together until well combined.
  4. Heat Butter or Oil: In a large skillet, heat the butter or vegetable oil over medium heat. Make sure the fat evenly coats the bottom of the skillet.
  5. Form the Rösti: Add the potato mixture to the skillet, spreading it out evenly to form a flat pancake-like shape. Press it down gently with a spatula.
  6. Cook Until Golden Brown: Allow the Rösti to cook undisturbed for about 8-10 minutes or until the bottom is golden brown and crispy. You can lift the edges with a spatula to check the color.
  7. Flip and Cook the Other Side: Once the bottom is golden brown, carefully flip the Rösti. You can do this by inverting it onto a plate and then sliding it back into the skillet, or by using a large spatula. Cook the other side until it’s golden brown and crispy.
  8. Serve: Once both sides are crispy and golden, transfer the Rösti to a serving plate. Cut it into wedges and serve hot.

Swiss Rösti is a versatile dish that can be enjoyed on its own or as a side dish. You can customize it by adding ingredients like cheese, bacon, or even topping it with a fried egg. Enjoy your Swiss Rösti!
