Successful Harvest of Third-Year Seedlings at Agrico Research

Promising Results in Potato Variety Trials

Agrico Research has reported a successful harvest of its third-year seedlings this week, with yields exceeding expectations, according to Maarten Vossen of Agrico Research. This marks a significant milestone in their ongoing efforts to develop new potato varieties for consumption.

The potatoes were harvested later in the season to allow for additional growth, enhancing their suitability for the consumer market. This trial represents the first consumption assessment for these promising new varieties. The evaluation process will determine the sensitivity of the potatoes to various issues, such as scab, hollow hearts, or growth cracks, and, crucially, it will assess the yield potential of these potential new varieties.

Following the harvest, a selection of the approved potatoes will be placed in green crates for further evaluation at Agrico Research. In January, depending on their intended use, these samples will undergo cooking or baking trials, along with underwater weight measurements to provide additional data on their performance.

This thorough research and testing process is essential for developing robust potato varieties that can meet market demands and withstand the challenges of modern agriculture. Agrico Research remains committed to advancing the potato industry through innovation and scientific inquiry.
