San José is set to host the first-ever Ibizan Potato Fair, a vibrant event designed for all audiences to coincide with the commencement of the potato harvesting season. This fair aims to showcase the significance of the native potato variety, often hailed as the “queen of the Ibizan garden.”
Scheduled for Saturday, May 18, 2024, the fair will take place during the San José Craft Market. From 12 to 2 pm at the Town Hall tent on the esplanade, attendees can enjoy a series of showcookings and a lecture. Renowned chef Bruno Hernandez from Can Berri Vell will present ‘A new look at tradition,’ featuring a delectable recipe starring the Ibizan potato. Maria José Amengual, the author of the gastronomic blog Dit i fet, will demonstrate ‘The rotten pot,’ a forgotten recipe. Furthermore, Marga Orell will engage children with ‘Sweet and salty potatoes for children,’ while nutrition expert Irene Roth will enlighten attendees on ‘The nutritional properties of the potato’ to dispel myths.
Following the culinary sessions, a popular tasting of the rotten pot dish will be available for sampling. This traditional Ibizan recipe, as described by Amengual, boasts a rich blend of ingredients including bacon, Ibizan red potato, onion, sobrasada, blood sausage, and black pepper, offering a delightful culinary experience.
Moreover, local bars and restaurants in San José will partake in a gastronomic contest featuring the Ibizan potato, serving their unique recipes to the public for just 5 euros per portion.
To conclude the festivities, from 4 to 6 pm, various children’s activities will be held next to the Town Hall, providing entertainment for the young attendees.
The Ibizan Potato Fair promises to be a day filled with culinary delights, cultural exploration, and community engagement, celebrating the rich heritage of the Ibizan potato and its role in the local gastronomy.
