The closure of Carnival festivities in Brazil did not herald a downturn in potato prices, as anticipated. Recent data shows a notable surge in wholesale potato prices across major markets, reflecting supply disruptions caused by inclement weather conditions in key producing regions such as Paraná and Minas Gerais. Despite a traditionally weaker post-Carnival demand, wholesale prices for premium potato varieties saw significant increases. In São Paulo, the average price for Agata Special potatoes reached BRL 151.11 per 25kg sack (USD 30.63), marking a 3.96% increase from the previous week. Similarly, prices soared in Rio de Janeiro to BRL 184.11 per sack (USD 37.32), representing a staggering 30.79% surge, while in Belo Horizonte, prices rose by 0.84% to BRL 146.6 (USD 29.73) per sack.
Looking ahead, the forecast of continued rainfall in the coming week suggests ongoing challenges in potato harvesting, which may further bolster prices. Additionally, the steady pace of potato imports from Argentina aimed at supporting the potato stick and chip industries underscores the complex dynamics influencing the potato market in Brazil.
