Rising Concern: Sales of Most Toxic Pesticides Remain Alarmingly High, Reports Pesticide Action Network Netherlands

Analysis of Recent Data Reveals Troubling Trends in Pesticide Sales, Highlighting Urgent Need for Action to Protect Environment and Public Health

Explore the latest findings from the annual pesticide sales report published by the CBS, indicating persistent high sales of the most toxic pesticides. Despite an overall decrease in pesticide sales, the sales of PFAS-containing pesticides have surged by over 13% compared to the previous year. This alarming trend raises concerns among environmental organizations, urging immediate action to mitigate the impact of these harmful chemicals on ecosystems and human health.

The recent release of the annual pesticide sales data by the CBS unveils a concerning trend: while overall pesticide sales have decreased by 4% from the previous year, sales of the most toxic pesticides have remained persistently high. According to data from the PBL, the sales of insecticides containing esfenvalerate, deltamethrin, and lambda-cyhalothrin have surged by 66% since 2010, contributing significantly to water pollution.

The alarming increase in sales of PFAS-containing pesticides, which are known for their detrimental effects on the environment and human health, underscores the urgent need for regulatory action. Environmental organizations like Natuur & Milieu are calling on the government to ban the production of these highly toxic pesticides and prioritize strategies for their rapid phase-out from the market.
