In sa Pobla, Spain, the official commencement of early potato harvesting signals a promising start to the export season, rekindling hopes for European markets. Following two years of adverse weather conditions impacting yields and exports, this season is anticipated to be a game-changer.
Joan Mateu, President of Mateu Export, expressed optimism about the ongoing harvest: “Despite late planting, favorable temperatures have expedited tuber collection, complemented by timely and sufficient rainfall.”
Mateu Export, responsible for exporting nearly 70% of Mallorca’s potato production, anticipates not only increased yields but also enhanced quality this season. President Mateu emphasized the notable size improvement of potatoes compared to the previous year.
The company projects harvesting up to 32,000 tons of potatoes, with exports ranging between 17,000 and 20,000 tons, constituting 53% to 62% of the total yield, respectively.
In terms of Mallorca’s total production, the Conselleria d’Agricultura forecasts an export volume of 31,000 tons, significantly surpassing previous years’ figures, particularly in contrast to the previous year’s harvest loss due to Storm Juliette.
Despite the favorable outlook, Mateu Export’s President underscored the importance of forthcoming weather conditions in ensuring a successful harvest, emphasizing the need for conducive weather without unnecessary rain or hail disruptions.
Regarding potato commercialization, Mateu highlighted the United Kingdom as the primary market, with initial shipments scheduled to depart on Wednesday. Subsequently, exports will extend to Scandinavian countries, Eastern Europe, and other emerging markets.
Mallorca’s potato export sector stands poised for a remarkable season following resilient efforts amidst weather adversities. With improved yields and quality, coupled with strategic market diversification, the region anticipates a revitalized presence in European markets, offering a beacon of hope for the agricultural community.
