The annual inspection of new potato varieties by members of the Mid-Netherlands Potato Breeders’ Association took place this morning. The inspection featured a harvest from a bold pilot field that mercilessly revealed the weaknesses of individual seedlings, as well as standard varieties that failed to withstand the test.
A total of 14 varieties were presented, directly or indirectly related to the Bioimpuls project – an initiative to create new potato varieties resistant to late blight. In addition, the event was full of familiar faces and pleasant conversations, which, of course, is an integral part of such events.
The inspection participants discussed the results, exchanged experiences and shared their impressions. This event became an excellent platform for getting acquainted with new technologies and achievements in the field of potato growing.
One of the main results of the inspection was the discovery of promising varieties that could be the answer to the challenges of late blight – one of the most destructive potato diseases. Bioimpuls project participants will continue to work on developing these varieties to ensure sustainability and high yield levels.
The event was also an excellent opportunity to discuss ideas and plans related to the development of the potato industry. Participants discussed the problems faced by potato farmers and proposed various solutions that could help improve production efficiency and reduce the impact of harmful factors on the potato crop.
In general, the inspection of young potato varieties was a successful event that brought together specialists and industry professionals. The event confirmed the importance and necessity of continuous development and innovation in agriculture, especially in the field of potato breeding.
