In the wake of the Noto Peninsula earthquake, 500 kilograms of seed potatoes, unable to be planted locally, were purchased by JA in Kaga. Approximately 30 farmers in Komatsu took on the task of cultivating these potatoes. Thanks to their efforts, a successful harvest yielded one ton of potatoes, which was then sent back to Noto on July 17. These potatoes are now being distributed free of charge through various JA centers in the region, with plans for affordable sales at the Nanao City direct sales depot, and usage in events and communal meals.
Farmer Yukio Matsumoto from Komatsu expressed his solidarity, stating, “As a fellow farmer, I wanted to help. We grew these potatoes with care, and I hope the people of Noto enjoy them.” Masanori Taniguchi, manager of JA Aguri, added, “With a decrease in production expected in Noto this year, we aim to supply as many potatoes as possible to support the community.”
The response to the Noto Peninsula earthquake demonstrates the strength of agricultural communities in times of crisis. Through the collaborative efforts of Kaga farmers and JA, not only were essential crops saved, but a significant contribution was made to the recovery of Noto’s agricultural sector. This initiative underscores the importance of community and resilience in agriculture, ensuring that even in the face of natural disasters, the bonds between farmers remain strong and productive.
