According to data from Trade Data Monitor, using the Harmonized Coding System, Schedule B, compiled from the United States Department of Commerce, Foreign Trade Division, the figures are nothing short of astonishing.
Export Value Soars by 19.05%
The most striking revelation is the surge in export values, which increased by an impressive 19.05% to reach a staggering USD 2.2 billion during the 12-month period from July 2022 to June 2023. This remarkable growth has a significant impact on the potato industry and the agricultural landscape of the United States.
Volume Increases by 3.85%
Simultaneously, the export volume witnessed an increase of 3.85%, reaching an impressive 3.3 million metric tons (fresh weight equivalent). This substantial volume growth showcases the United States’ ability to meet the demand for its high-quality potato products on a global scale.
Category-wise Growth
Breaking down the export data by categories, it becomes evident that the increase in export volume was led by dehydrated potatoes and chips, which rose by 25.63% and 11.19%, respectively. This robust growth signifies the expanding global appetite for processed potato products.
Mexico Emerges as Top Market
In a historic shift, Mexico emerged as the United States’ largest potato export market during this period, followed closely by Canada and Japan. The Mexican market opened up to U.S. fresh potato exports in May 2022, a development that played a pivotal role in this reshuffling of markets.
Frozen Potato Exports Surge
Despite a 4.54% decrease in volume, the value of U.S. frozen potato exports rose by 20.43% to reach USD 1.4 billion. Japan, Mexico, and South Korea stood out as top export markets for frozen potatoes, with a substantial 25.93% growth in export volume to Japan.
Dehydrated Potatoes Shine
The value of exported dehydrated potatoes increased by 24.00% to reach USD 257 million, with volume increasing by 25.63% to reach 965,523 metric tons. Canada, Japan, and Mexico were the leading destinations for U.S. dehydrated potatoes, with exports increasing in both value and volume for each of these countries.
Fresh Potato Sales Show Promise
Fresh potato sales recorded a remarkable 15.57% increase in value, amounting to USD 310.4 million, despite a slight 3.07% decrease in volume. The key export markets for U.S. fresh potatoes, including Canada, Mexico, and Japan, experienced growth in both value and volume, particularly in the case of Mexico.
Potato Chips and Seed Potatoes on the Rise
While representing smaller portions of U.S. potato exports, potato chips increased in value by 11.34% and in volume by 11.19%. Seed potato exports also saw growth in value by 3.68%, despite a decrease in volume by 5.82%. The export value of U.S. potato chips and seed potatoes amounted to USD 219.0 million and USD 15.1 million, respectively.
