Quarantine for the golden potato nematode is maintained in the Ust-Kut region of the Angara region. As a result of laboratory studies in the Irkutsk branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “VNIIKR”, the presence of a dangerous quarantine organism was not confirmed in 11 out of 43 previously infected areas, but it does not affect the rest.
- This means that the owners of household plots carry out the activities specified in the prescriptions: planting seed tubers, using nematode-resistant varieties (Red Scarlet, Pomegranate, Latona, etc.), early planting potatoes at a depth of 7-10 cm and in ridges, crop rotations, applying ash, slaked lime, chalk, mineral fertilizers into the soil, watering the soil with infusions of mullein and chicken manure, removing tops from the plots, – noted the Office of the Rosselkhoznadzor for the Irkutsk Region and the Republic of Buryatia.
It should be noted that the golden potato nematode is one of the most dangerous potato pests, an object of external and internal quarantine in Russia. It also affects tomatoes, eggplants and weeds from the nightshade family. Inhibition of affected plants begins immediately after emergence. The vital activity of the larvae inside the roots leads to disruption of the supply of nutrients and water to the plants. Because of this, the leaves turn yellow and wither, the tubers form small, underdeveloped. The potato nematode spreads mainly in the stage of cysts, which stick to objects that come into contact with contaminated soil and are transported to any distance. Usually cysts are carried with planting material, with soil left on tubers, roots and bulbs, rainwater and wind.
The potato nematode causes especially significant damage in household plots and in fields with a reduced crop rotation, where potatoes are grown permanently or return to their original place in the second or third year. Yield losses can be 30-80%. In addition to direct losses, there are losses caused by a ban or restriction on the transportation of products from contaminated zones.
