In recent weeks, Brazil has faced a substantial challenge in its potato industry, specifically concerning the quality of the harvest. The elevated temperatures experienced throughout the past week have compromised the quality of harvested potatoes, resulting in a noticeable decrease in sales values across various wholesale points monitored by Hortifruti/Cepea.
In São Paulo/SP, the average price of the specialty potato variety, Agata, dropped to BRL 69.75 (USD 14.25) per 25 kg bag at wholesale, marking a 2.79% decline. Similarly, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), the tuber was sold at BRL 69.06 (USD 14.11) per sack, reflecting a 2.16% decrease. In Belo Horizonte/BH, prices saw a more substantial decline, reaching BRL 65.00 (USD 13.28) per sack, representing a 5.38% reduction.
The impact on quality also affected exports to Uruguay, where a significant portion of the potato shipments exhibited damage and even signs of rot.
The interplay of climatic conditions and agriculture is evident as Brazil grapples with a decline in potato quality, causing a ripple effect on both domestic and international markets. Farmers and stakeholders must strategize to mitigate such challenges and safeguard the industry’s stability.
