The roots of commercial potato cultivation in PEI trace back to 1790, marking the commencement of a longstanding tradition. PEI potatoes have not only fueled the province’s economy but have also made their way to five continents and around 44 countries, representing up to a quarter of the world’s potato trade. While there exist over 5,000 potato varieties worldwide, PEI boasts cultivating over 75 unique varieties.
The rich heritage surrounding PEI potatoes contributes to a distinct brand that Islanders take pride in. From inspiring songs to pop culture references, PEI Potatoes have become an integral part of the local culture. Many PEI farms are family-owned, with generations tending to potato crops, showcasing a deep-rooted commitment to land stewardship.
Despite evolving farming practices, PEI’s dedication to sustainable land management remains unwavering. Enhanced agricultural techniques and technological advancements have solidified PEI’s position as an industry leader. Potatoes play a crucial role in global food security, ranking as the third most consumed food after rice and wheat. They offer high productivity on limited land, serve as a nutritious vegetable, and are efficient water users, yielding more calories per liter compared to other staple crops.
The establishment of the International Day of Potato garnered support from global advocates, including the World Potato Congress situated in PEI. Greg Donald, the General Manager of the PEI Potato Board and Treasurer of WPC, expresses delight over the realization of this significant day, emphasizing the paramount importance of potatoes as a crop.
Celebrating the inaugural International Day of Potato in 2024, the focus lies on recognizing the potato’s impact on producers and consumers, under the theme “Harvesting diversity, feeding hope.” The potato industry in PEI, renowned for its exceptional taste derived from the island’s distinctive red soil, generates a substantial economic impact of $1.35 billion and sustains over 8.8% of the Island’s full-time employment.
