Specialists of the Department of Agriculture were able to taste potato varieties of domestic and foreign selection. The event was organized by the State Sort Commission for the Vologda Oblast.
For taste assessment, 16 varieties were presented, of which 6 varieties of foreign selection, the rest – domestic. The evaluation was carried out according to several criteria: taste, boilability of the tuber during cooking, consistency, color of the pulp (varieties with white, cream and various shades of yellow pulp were presented).
The highest marks were received by the domestic variety Flagmani and BP -808 (Netherlands).
And now a little about these varieties.
Potato Flagman. Mid-early variety of table potatoes. The growing season is from 80 to 100 days. Each bush, on average, sets 10-12 aligned large tubers, weighing 110-140 g. Beautiful, with thin beige skin and creamy flesh, with a small number of superficial eyes. Starch content – up to 16%. Potatoes have excellent taste and do not darken during heat treatment. Recommended!
Potato BP-808. The peel is smooth, dense, yellow, has small superficial eyes, which greatly facilitates washing, peeling and other procedures with potatoes. The flesh is yellow. The yellow color of the potato is formed due to the large amount of the pigment carotene, which plays the role of an antioxidant in the body. The starch content – from 16 to 19% – is a high level. The higher the starch content, the tastier the potato. Potatoes with a high starch content are used for mashed potatoes, they are well boiled. Starch lowers cholesterol levels.
And what is the use of potatoes? Potatoes are a valuable product. It contains about a dozen different macro- and microelements, among which are such important ones as calcium, potassium, iron, etc. Potato tubers contain B vitamins, which are involved in the synthesis of hemoglobin and antibodies and are of great importance for the metabolism in the body. The well-known vitamin C is also present in this product. Having eaten only 300 g of potatoes, you will give your body an almost complete daily allowance of this useful substance. And why do you need a lemon after that?
