At the end of April, the early early potatoes began to be harvested in Andalusia, mainly in the province of Seville, but also on plots in Córdoba, Cádiz and Huelva.
These potatoes from Andalusia, together with those from Cartagena, are the first European potatoes to enter the market in significant quantities and to take over from the storage potatoes. The area of new potatoes in province is currently around 8,000 hectares, 3,500 of which in the province of Seville.
Regarding the outlook for the coming season, it is expected that the frost of recent weeks across Europe will affect the start of the potato harvest. The export of province potatoes can also be delayed by a few days and as a result the 2021 season will run a little longer than normal. About 70% of province potatoes are destined for export, with Germany as the main destination.
Promotion campaign The Andalusian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Association of Growers and Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables of Andalusia (Asociafruit), has, as every year, launched a campaign to promote the Andalusian first potato, with actions in the the press, on the radio, social media and the internet.
This initiative, which coincides with the start of the harvest, aims to highlight the advantages of this fresh product compared to the storage potatoes. The first potato is characterized, among other things, by its taste and freshness and by better cooking properties.
