In a groundbreaking stride toward self-sufficiency, the potato seed production sector in Koraput, Odisha, is abuzz with activity during this Rabi season. Samarendu Mohanty, Asia Regional Director at the International Potato Center (CIP), recently reported an impressive initiative. The team in Koraput is working tirelessly, aiming to produce a staggering 20 lakhs (2 million) apical rooted cuttings (ARC) within the next month and a half.

This ambitious endeavor is part of a broader mission: to establish a robust potato seed supply chain within the state. With an annual production target of 2 million ARC, the endeavor is geared toward achieving 100% self-sufficiency in potato seeds. Such an accomplishment would mark a significant milestone in the region’s agricultural landscape.

The success of this initiative can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of various individuals and organizations. Samarendu Mohanty expressed gratitude to the dedicated team, including Madhavareddy RN, Ranjan Sahoo, Debasis Samantaray, Dr. Shishir Srivastava, Dr. Murali C. N, and others, whose unwavering dedication has been instrumental in this endeavor. Their hard work, combined with the invaluable support from the Horticulture Directorate and the International Potato Center (CIP), has propelled Koraput one step closer to its goal.

It not only ensures a steady supply of high-quality potato seeds but also contributes significantly to the economic empowerment of local farmers. The initiative aligns seamlessly with the broader objectives of sustainable agriculture and food security.
