In an effort to boost agricultural diversification and address climate-related farming challenges, Siddhi Vinayak Agri Processing Pvt. Ltd. (SV Agri) has launched an ambitious training campaign that has drawn the participation of over 2,000 farmers across the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, India. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to encourage farmers to move away from traditional wheat cultivation toward potato farming, with a focus on introducing more resilient and profitable potato varieties.
The campaign, spearheaded by Hemant Gaur, Managing Director of Siddhi Vinayak Agri, emphasized the economic and environmental advantages of diversifying crop production. The highlight of the meetings was the introduction of two innovative potato varieties—Ganesh and Winner—both developed in collaboration with Agrico, a global leader in potato seed production.
The Potential of New Potato Varieties
Ganesh: A Climate-Smart Solution for Farmers
Ganesh is a medium-duration potato variety that matures in 80 to 90 days, with a yield potential of 28-30 metric tons per hectare. This variety is ideal for both processing and table use, offering farmers versatility in how they market their produce. It features a cream-colored skin with a smooth texture, making it attractive to processors. Additionally, Ganesh has a medium dry matter content of 22-23%, lower TPOD (Total Polyphenol Oxidase Disorder), and can be stored for up to eight months without any deterioration, an attribute that enhances its marketability over time.
Given its storage longevity and superior fry appearance, Ganesh is well-suited to industries that rely on long-term supplies for processed foods. Its climate-resilient characteristics make it especially valuable for farmers in Madhya Pradesh, where fluctuating weather patterns have become a growing concern.
Winner: High Yields and Excellent Fry Quality
The Winner variety is another breakthrough introduced during the campaign. This potato has a longer growing cycle, maturing in 110 to 115 days, and offers an even higher yield potential, reaching up to 35-40 metric tons per hectare. Winner’s smooth golden skin and light-yellow flesh make it highly desirable for both fresh market sales and processing. It has a solid content of 22%-23%, and its chips are known for their golden color and high fry quality, making it popular among processors.
Winner’s storability and high fry quality have positioned it as a preferred variety for farmers looking to increase their returns. Its resilience to climate-related stresses further enhances its appeal in regions vulnerable to weather extremes.
Supporting Farmers with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)
In addition to promoting new potato varieties, the campaign also emphasized the importance of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). Farmers were trained on how to improve crop quality, reduce production costs, and increase productivity by adopting best practices. One key focus area was the shorter growing cycle of potatoes compared to wheat, which allows farmers to harvest multiple times a year, boosting income and mitigating risks associated with climate change and fluctuating market demands.
Crop Diversification for a Sustainable Future
Madhya Pradesh has traditionally been a wheat-growing region, but increasing climate variability has pushed farmers to consider more resilient alternatives. Potatoes, with their shorter growing cycles, higher yields, and ability to store for longer periods, present an attractive option. The introduction of high-quality, disease-resistant varieties such as Ganesh and Winner offers farmers a way to reduce their dependence on wheat while improving their profitability.
SV Agri’s holistic approach to the potato value chain, from seed production to final product processing, provides farmers with 360-degree support. By collaborating with international partners like Agrico, the company has been able to deliver superior seed varieties tailored to the local climate, ensuring better yields and long-term sustainability for farmers.
The large-scale training campaign by Siddhi Vinayak Agri Processing Pvt. Ltd. marks a significant milestone in transforming the agricultural landscape of Madhya Pradesh. By encouraging the shift from wheat to climate-smart potato farming, the campaign empowers farmers to adopt more resilient and profitable crops. The introduction of the Ganesh and Winner potato varieties, along with practical training on Good Agricultural Practices, has set the foundation for a more sustainable and prosperous farming community. This initiative not only enhances food security but also builds a more resilient agricultural system in the face of changing climate conditions.
