Altunhisar in Niğde has seen a dramatic rise in potato production this year, positioning itself even more prominently as a leading potato hub in Turkey. Niğde Agriculture and Forestry Director Asım Baş highlighted that the area dedicated to potato cultivation has expanded from 11,720 decares last year to an impressive 30,000 decares this year. This increase is expected to yield around 120,000 tons of potatoes, a significant jump from the 46,000 tons harvested last year.
The early potato harvest in Altunhisar begins at dawn, with farmers working diligently until midday to avoid the peak heat. These early potatoes, or “summer potatoes,” are highly sought after and are distributed across Turkey. The dramatic increase in cultivation area reflects the growing demand and the region’s potential to meet it.
Niğde’s unique climate and fertile soil create an ideal environment for potato farming, contributing to the high yield. The region’s farmers have optimized their practices to enhance productivity, including the use of advanced agricultural techniques and efficient irrigation systems. This strategic approach has not only increased the volume of production but also improved the quality of the potatoes, making them highly competitive in the market.
Asım Baş emphasized the economic impact of this growth, noting that the expanded cultivation and increased yield provide significant economic benefits to the local community. The potatoes from Altunhisar are distributed nationwide, supporting food security and contributing to the agricultural economy. This expansion in potato farming is part of a broader effort to boost agricultural productivity and sustainability in the region.
The remarkable increase in potato production in Altunhisar, Niğde, underscores the region’s agricultural potential and the effectiveness of strategic cultivation practices. With a 200% increase in production area and an anticipated yield of 120,000 tons, Altunhisar is set to significantly contribute to Turkey’s potato supply. This success story highlights the importance of agricultural innovation and efficient resource management in achieving substantial productivity gains.
