A universe of 126 varieties of potatoes is being planted on a property, owned by the municipality of Puqueldón, with the aim of creating a living museum of this type of tuber, typical of the island of Chiloé.
The project is coordinated by The Local Development Program (Prodesal) and has the participation of local farmers. As reported, two gardens will be established in order to make a record and also as a sample so that the community can know them and see how they are protected for future generations.
With its pure nature, its myths and legends, Chiloé offers ideal climate and soil conditions for potato cultivation. The 286 varieties of potatoes native to Chiloé constitute a national heritage.
fries.
Most of the potatoes that are known are rounded in shape, with yellow, gray or pink peel, and a white or yellow pulp. In Chiloé, on the other hand, there are many others, such as those with purple, blue or bicolor skin, bluish, violet or yellow pulp, and elongated and curved shapes. The varieties that are most often found in the market are: Viscocha (a variety with plenty of water, excellent for masses of potatoes as gnocchi, chapaleles or milcao), Clavela Lisa (pink, very creamy, and it is good to make a potato tortilla, due to its high amount of water), Guadacho (red, blue, white, and black), Goat (of gorgeous pink color; the taste is sweet and slightly spicy; it is recommended to consume it as French fries or golden potato), and a Witch (a pope, dark purple, with a high level of water, which is very good as a salad).
