Insights from SRUC Highlight Economic Impact and Sector Stability\
A recent study conducted by Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) underscores a significant shift in the UK’s potato consumption trends since the 1970s, with a notable 71% decline in demand for fresh potatoes as consumers increasingly favor alternatives such as pasta and rice.
The report also addresses Brexit’s impact, particularly the loss of access to export markets for seed potatoes, which has further dampened demand, particularly in Scotland. Known for its disease-free growing conditions and high health status, Scotland plays a crucial role in seed potato production, contributing substantially to the UK’s agricultural output.
Between 2018 and 2020, Scotland’s farm gate potato production, encompassing both seed and ware potatoes, amounted to GBP245 million, highlighting its vital role within the Scottish economy and comprising 22% of total UK potato production. Despite the UK’s current status as a net importer of processed potato products, Scotland remains a significant exporter of seed potatoes, with 75% of the UK’s potato crop originating from its fields.
Beyond its farm gate value, the Scottish potato sector generates substantial economic activity through processing and supply chain operations, including specialized equipment, storage, and processing facilities. This sector supports approximately 2,880 full-time jobs and contributes GBP507 million in output.
Steven Thomson, Senior Agricultural Economist at SRUC, emphasized the complex nature of agri-food supply chains and the critical role of Scotland’s seed potato sector in supporting both domestic and international potato production. He stressed the sector’s importance in justifying government support for research, development, and policy measures aimed at addressing challenges like potato cyst nematodes (PCN) and other diseases.
Gerry Saddler, Chief Plant Health Officer for Scotland, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the potato sector’s resilience amidst global challenges and the need for continued support to maintain high production standards.
