The demand for free-buy supplies of potatoes in the EU remains robust, but the supply is tightening, leading to record-high prices in the processing potato market. Growers across the region are grappling with quality issues stemming from last year’s wet harvest, resulting in compromised storability and diminished stocks for the free-buy market.
Many growers find themselves unable to offer sufficient stocks due to quality concerns, prompting a scarcity in the market. As a consequence, those with available supplies are keenly aware of the supply shortage and are holding out for even higher prices. The latest data from Mintec Analytics highlights the severity of the situation, with the Mintec Benchmark Price (MBP) for Dutch processing potatoes reaching €37.5/100kg on 27th February 2024, marking the highest price for February since records began in 2014.
The Netherlands, a key player in the processing industry, is experiencing signs of the shortage as processing organizations struggle to secure an adequate potato supply. VAVI, the processing organization in the Netherlands, reported a 10.8% decrease in processed potatoes compared to the previous year, signaling the impact of the supply crunch. With challenges in obtaining domestic supplies, Dutch processing is increasingly reliant on imports from neighboring countries, further exacerbating the situation.
The aftermath of heavy rainfall during the harvest season has compounded the issue, with a significant portion of potatoes left in saturated ground or lost during harvesting. The NEPG estimates that approximately 650 thousand tonnes were either lost during harvesting or left in the ground, exacerbating the supply shortage. Potatoes harvested in wet conditions are unsuitable for long-term storage, further restricting the availability of uncontracted supplies.
As processors vie for limited stocks, competition intensifies, driving prices upwards. The tight supply situation is expected to persist, buoying prices as the market year progresses. In light of these challenges, stakeholders in the potato industry are closely monitoring market dynamics, strategizing to navigate the evolving landscape of tight supply and heightened demand.
