In a recent update from Chetan Bhot, Global Food Value Chain Manager at UPL, North Gujarat emerges as a prominent region for potato processing. Renowned for its superior quality potatoes ideal for manufacturing Potato Chips and French Fries, North Gujarat has become a nucleus for potato processing companies and contract farming initiatives.
Amidst this burgeoning industry, processing companies have taken proactive steps to guide potato growers in adopting Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture practices. The concerted efforts of farmers in Gujarat to adhere to Good Agriculture Practices (G.A.P) have resulted in the production of top-quality potatoes.
As the potato harvesting season gains momentum in Gujarat, with February to March marking the peak months, UPL has collaborated closely with processing companies and potato growers to address present and future challenges in potato cultivation. This year, UPL’s implementation of the ProNutiva model plots has showcased the efficacy of RegenAg practices. Through the integration of Biosolutions (NPP) with conventional plant protection products, ProNutiva has demonstrated remarkable outcomes, with yields from model plots surpassing those from farmer practice plots by 25 to 30%, accompanied by superior potato quality.
UPL ProNutiva stands as a testament to innovation in agriculture, offering solutions that support sustainable and regenerative practices while enhancing grower economics and meeting the evolving requirements of the food value chain. The success achieved owes much to the dedication and expertise of the Gujarat UPL Team.
With a focus on sustainability and quality, North Gujarat is poised to lead the way in potato processing, setting a precedent for responsible agricultural practices and economic growth in the region.
