PepsiCo India has collaborated with Cropin, a global agritech firm, to launch a crop intelligence model for potato crops. The model provides farmers with predictive insights, including crop stages, health, and weather data, enabling them to maximize yields and quality. The system generates a forecast up to 10 days in advance, which is critical for identifying and mitigating crop diseases such as blight, which can cause up to 80% of yield losses. The model is being implemented as a pilot project in demo farms in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, and the benefits of the model extend to small-scale farmers who have limited resources.
PepsiCo’s Precision Agriculture model for India aims to add value by increasing productivity and water safety through affordable technology. The Crop Intelligence Model is a significant step towards achieving this goal. By leveraging satellite imagery and remote sensing data, the model enables farmers to optimize the use of agri-inputs such as water, fertilizers, and pesticides.
The model covers 62 farms in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh during the pilot stage. The farmers receive necessary training and support from field agronomists who help them understand the dashboard and leverage the insights. The dashboards and related information can be accessed by the farmers through easy-to-use smartphone-based apps, namely “Cropin Grow” for farm data management and “Plot Risk” for crop intelligence. The apps support multiple languages, and PepsiCo plans to offer the solutions in 14 regional languages, demonstrating the company’s commitment to inclusivity in the supply chain.
PepsiCo India’s crop intelligence model is a game-changer for potato farmers, enabling them to optimize crop yields and quality while mitigating the risks associated with crop diseases and weather fluctuations. The model demonstrates the potential of precision agriculture to transform the farming industry in India by providing farmers with affordable and scalable solutions. PepsiCo’s commitment to empowering small-scale farmers and promoting sustainability in the supply chain is laudable and sets new standards for global farming.
