Officials believe a deep-frying machine is behind the fire that destroyed a potato processing facility in Belfast, Maine. WMTW News 8 reports that multiple fire crews were called to the fire at the Penobscot McCrum potato processing facility in Belfast Thursday morning.
According to officials, eight employees were working at the time of the fire but were able to evacuate the building.
“I was worried about something exploding. Possibly affecting me, my son, my fiancé – that’s a very scary thing to think about,” nearby resident and former worker at the plant Anthony Hybers said.
Hybers thinks the loss of the plant will be devastating to the area. “It’s going to be detrimental to the community. I feel like there are a lot of jobs there that are now lost,” Hybers said.
