This year, the potato growers from North Rhine-Westphalian (NRW) in Germany, harvested 1.92m tons, a total which is 13.3% higher than in 2020.
With a yield of 51.6 tons per hectare, the amount of spuds lifted this year is 11.9% higher than in the previous year, according to data reports from the State Statistical Office, based on the final results of the “Special Harvest and Quality Determination”. At 37,200 hectares, the area sown with cultivars this year was 1.3% larger than in 2020.
“Despite the exceptionally cold spring and the wet and changeable weather during this year’s growing season, late summer ensured a good increase in yield,” analysts mentioned.
As the statisticians also report, the amount of potatoes harvested this year exceeds the average harvest volume of the years 2015 to 2020 by 22.1%.
Moreover, the area yield was 10% higher and the area sown with potatoes was 10.9% higher than the average for the last six years.
