Data from the Frontlines:
Calbee’s story is a reflection of the tumultuous food supply landscape that has gripped the world. The global food crisis, marked by surging prices, was instigated by a cascade of events including pandemic-induced supply chain disturbances, an unprecedented drought in Brazil, and amplified global utilization of vegetable oils, sugar, and cereals1. The eruption of the Ukrainian conflict in early 2022 further exacerbated the situation by severing access to critical grain and vegetable oil exporters, leading to record-breaking spikes in food prices1.

Calbee, renowned for its delectable chips, typically derives approximately 90% of its potato supply from Japan, with the majority sourced from Hokkaido1. Yet, the onslaught of drought conditions in 2021 diminished domestic potato yields by 8% and 14% in the fiscal years 2021 and 2022 respectively1. Efforts to augment supplies through imports from the United States were thwarted by global shipping container shortages and natural disasters1. Consequently, Calbee encountered the need to curtail sales promotions, bear inflated procurement and shipping costs, and witnessed a 7% reduction in operating profit1.

Innovative Strategies and Resilience:
In the face of adversity, Calbee is orchestrating innovative solutions to fortify its potato supply chain. Collaborations with farmers across Japan aim to elevate domestic potato production from 320,000 tons to an ambitious 400,000 tons annually by the end of the decade1. The company also contemplates reducing its reliance on American potato imports by half and exploring alternative markets such as Europe1. This diversification strategy not only bolsters supply resilience but also safeguards against future disruptions.

The company’s CEO, Makoto Ehara, underscores the significance of weather stability and the expansion of cultivation areas across Japan1. This approach aims to mitigate the impact of weather-driven shortages that severely affect production1. Furthermore, Calbee’s investment of USD 1 billion into automation and overseas expansion underscores its unwavering commitment to growth, even in the face of supply challenges1.

Calbee’s journey through the treacherous waters of supply shortages offers invaluable insights to farmers, agronomists, agricultural engineers, farm owners, and scientists in the realm of agriculture. As the world grapples with unpredictable weather patterns and supply chain intricacies, the tale of Calbee stands as a testament to innovation, resilience, and adaptability. Weathering the storm demands a proactive stance, diversification, and a relentless pursuit of sustainable solutions – principles that echo across the agricultural spectrum.
