In 2025, the Diocese of Augsburg is once again launching an initiative aimed at preserving and promoting ancient and rare potato varieties. This initiative highlights the importance of biodiversity, regional gardening, and community collaboration.
Details of the Initiative
As part of the project, 350 free seed kits will be distributed, each containing five tubers of different potato varieties: Heiderot, Linda, La Ratte, Sirtema, and Violetta. These kits are available to individuals, families, and communities interested in growing rare varieties.
Additionally, 75 double kits, each containing ten tubers, will be provided for kindergartens, schools, youth groups, and church organizations. This is a great opportunity for educational institutions and organizations to involve young people in plant cultivation and introduce them to the basics of agriculture.
Participation Requirements
Registration for the initiative is open from February 4 to February 25, 2025, on the official website www.kartoffelaktion.de. Participants who do not receive a kit can subscribe to the monthly “Potato Letter”, which includes helpful tips, spiritual reflections, and materials for children.
Growing Methods and Recommendations
The received tubers can be grown in various ways: in garden beds, special planting bags, or even in buckets. However, based on the experience of previous participants, the best results are achieved when using raised garden beds, which provide optimal growing conditions.
Additional Events and Competitions
This year, the Donau-Ries District Farmers’ Association has joined the initiative, inviting kindergartens and schools to participate in a potato-themed collage contest. Winners will be invited to a special project day at a local mill, where they can learn more about agricultural processing.
Trend Analysis and the Importance of the Initiative
Such initiatives are becoming increasingly popular as they help preserve agricultural heritage and encourage interest in sustainable farming. Preserving ancient potato varieties not only supports biodiversity but also fosters regional traditions and strengthens community bonds.
