In the Astrakhan region, a scientific-practical seminar “Varieties, technologies and prospects for growing potatoes in the conditions of the Northern Caspian Sea” was held. Breeders from all over the country, scientists and foreign guests arrived in our region. They discussed potato varieties suitable for our region, as well as the possibilities of import substitution. Flamingos, La Strada, Arizona, Riviera, yellow, pink, red potatoes. From the number of varieties and unusual names, eyes run wide. And despite the general similarity, each instance has a unique taste. Breeders from all over the country presented their products at the scientific and production seminar “Varieties, technologies and prospects for growing potatoes in the conditions of the Northern Caspian Sea”. Denis Kulakevich represents a potato production and breeding company. Their seeds are popular with Astrakhan farmers. “In the Astrakhan region, first of all, potatoes are on the table, that is, this is a market for fresh potatoes. It should have a fairly transparent skin, rather small eyes and occurrences. And despite this, resistance to mechanical damage, so as not to damage it during harvesting,” says agromanager Denis Kulakevich. The seminar was organized by the Astrakhan branch of the Russian Agricultural Center. Scientists from all over Russia and a delegation from Kazakhstan arrived at the meeting. The participants discussed new technologies for growing potatoes, as well as which varieties of this crop will perform well in the Caspian region. Emphasis on Russian selection. “I am pleased that out of 49 varieties that we tested and 2 varieties that were taken for control, we have 14 varieties of Russian selection. It was they who produced such a result this year that they were not inferior in many positions and even surpassed imported varieties in taste, ”says Viktor Shlyakhov, head of the Rosselkhozcenter branch in the Astrakhan region. The seminar was held on the basis of Evgeny Anufriev’s peasant farm, one of the largest potato producers in the Astrakhan region. About 100 tons of potatoes are harvested daily from the farmer’s fields. Eugene is sure that this culture has great prospects in our region. “We can absolutely do without Kyrgyzstan and so on, because we have a colossal potential. In our country, at best, I’m not afraid of this word, 50-60% in one year can be increased in Astrakhan,” said the head of the KFH “Anufriev Evgeny Alexandrovich” Evgeny Anufriev. The goal is achievable, the seminar participants believe. Astrakhan farmers are working on this – they are trying new varieties, new technologies, entering new markets.
