The World’s Longest Potato Noodle: A 500-Metre Marvel from China

In a feat of culinary craftsmanship, the world’s longest potato noodle has been created in China, stretching an extraordinary 500.152 metres (1,620 ft 11.04 in)—longer than four and a half American football fields! This astonishing achievement took place in Dao Bazai Township, Weichang Manchu and Mongol Autonomous County, Chengde, Hebei Province, a region celebrated for its thriving potato cultivation.

A Beloved Delicacy with a Twist

Potato noodles are cherished in Chinese cuisine for their unique chewiness and soft texture, but they can be tricky to perfect. Overcook them even slightly, and you risk a sticky, gloopy mess. Yet, the artisans of Weichang County have mastered their craft, creating noodles that remain perfectly intact and pliable no matter how long they’re boiled.

Crafting the Record-Breaking Noodle

This monumental task required a talented team of 14 artisans, all experts in traditional noodle-making techniques. Before the process began, two food hygiene inspectors from the local market administration meticulously checked the equipment and participants to ensure the highest standards.

The Kneading Process

The journey to this record-breaking noodle started with a colossal batch of dough. Four craftsmen collaborated, kneading the mixture from different directions in a massive pot for nearly half an hour. The dough’s consistency was crucial; the length of the noodle depended on its pliability.

Shaping and Cooling

Once the dough was ready, a craftsman took a small piece and placed it in a gourd funnel, allowing the noodle to flow into a giant pot of boiling water. Another craftsman used a wooden pole to guide the noodles into a long tank filled with cold water, instantly cooling them to preserve their pliability.

Craftsmen stationed along the tank meticulously guided the noodle to its full length. One craftsman then measured the noodle on a one-metre-long table before rolling it onto a wooden wheel, ready for the final measurement.

A Moment of Triumph

Under the watchful eyes of a Guinness World Records adjudicator, the noodle’s incredible length was officially confirmed. The crowd erupted in cheers as the team celebrated this extraordinary achievement.

Cultural and Economic Significance

This record-breaking event coincided with the Double Ninth Festival, a traditional Chinese celebration of longevity and health. It highlighted the beauty of traditional craftsmanship and brought global attention to Weichang County’s potato industry. By showcasing their culinary expertise, the artisans have added momentum to the local economy, fostering pride in the community.

This remarkable accomplishment isn’t just about setting a world record—it’s a testament to the ingenuity, dedication, and cultural richness of the people of Weichang County.
