Successful cooperation: implementation of a hybrid potato growing system in Central Europe

As reported by Solynta | hybrid potato breeding, a hybrid potato growing system is beginning to develop successfully in Central Europe thanks to close cooperation with the Greek company Agris. Distribution of hybrid seeds is facilitated thanks to Agris’ already existing infrastructure.

According to Theologos Koufakis of Agris: “We distribute seedlings grown from hybrid true seeds through our growers and regular shipments throughout the region. Many potato growers are excited about this new concept; quality starting material will give them the opportunity to achieve higher yields than ever before.”

The first results obtained in the field have already shown the great potential of hybrid potato varieties from Solynta. Solynta has started this partnership with Agris for Central Europe, which depends on seed tubers from other parts of the continent. Despite the region’s rich agricultural heritage, it lacks clean, quality starting material, so most family farmers do not have access to good starting material for growing potatoes. This partnership will address the urgent need to improve the availability and distribution of high-quality seeds and seed tubers, and improve the self-sufficiency, food security and economics of farmers in the region.

Agris, which has offices in 6 Central European countries, will supply and support its customers, many of whom are “family farmers”, with a team of specialists and support from Solynta product professionals. This collaboration aims to improve the availability of quality inputs, promote self-sufficiency, food security and the economy of farmers in the Central European region.
