Could Potatoes Win Gold in Olympic Cuisine?

Survey Highlights Potatoes as the Star Ingredient of French Olympic-Themed Meals

As France prepares to host the Olympic Games, a recent survey conducted by the Opinion Way polling institute for the CNIPT (Comité National Interprofessionnel de la Pomme de Terre) reveals that the humble potato may emerge as a culinary champion during the festivities. With its universal appeal and versatility, the potato is expected to take center stage on dinner tables across the country as families and friends gather to celebrate both athletic achievements and the shared experience of good food.

The Potato: The Olympic Champion of the Dinner Table

According to the survey, the potato will be the centerpiece of many Olympic-themed meals, favored for its adaptability to a wide range of dishes. As sociologist Ronan Chastellier points out, “The Olympic Games are not just about celebrating athletic prowess; they’re also about bringing cultures together. Meals that combine natural ingredients, health, and indulgence will be a way to celebrate these events.” The survey indicates that potatoes, often seen as a staple in French cuisine, will take on new prominence during this period of national celebration.

The poll highlights the most popular forms in which potatoes will be enjoyed during the Games. The classic burger with homemade fries tops the list, favored by 33% of respondents. Potato salad comes in second, with 29% preferring this refreshing dish. Other options include potatoes served with a shareable sauce (12%) and steamed potatoes (9%), demonstrating the versatility of this beloved ingredient.

Barbecues and Social Gatherings Lead the Way

The survey also emphasizes the social aspect of the Olympics, particularly among younger generations. Fifty percent of young people, especially those aged 18-24 (54%) and 25-34 (40%), see the Games as a festive occasion to gather with friends. “For this age group, the Olympics are a perfect excuse to come together,” says Chastellier. “In a country where meals are central to social interaction, cooking and watching the Games will naturally go hand in hand. Starting July 26th, France will be immersed in Olympic fever, and cooking-themed meals will be a way to engage with the spirit of the Games. Eating Olympic-themed food will be like participating in the sport itself!”

The survey also highlights the types of meals that are likely to dominate during the two weeks of Olympic competition. Barbecues top the list at 37%, followed closely by apéritifs at 36%. Brunches and dinners both ranked at 13%, underscoring the variety of ways in which French households plan to celebrate the Games with food.

While the CNIPT has not yet provided an estimate of the economic impact of this potato surge, it’s clear that the Olympics are set to provide a significant boost to the popularity of this versatile vegetable.
