Celebrating the Inaugural International Potato Day: Mark Your Calendars!

In just three months, on May 30th, the inaugural “International Potato Day” will be celebrated worldwide. This day was established by the UN General Assembly on December 8th, 2023, aiming to raise awareness about the diverse nutritional, economic, ecological, and cultural values of potatoes. Furthermore, it seeks to highlight their invaluable contribution as food and income sources for rural areas, aligning with the Global Sustainability Agenda “Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” to achieve sustainable development goals.

The International Potato Day provides a global platform to underscore the significance of this valuable crop in combating hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. In Germany, this day offers an opportunity to focus on aspects such as resource-efficient production, sustainability, regionalism, and the positive health aspects of potatoes.

The United Nations expressly invites all member states, civil society, and the private sector to appropriately commemorate the International Potato Day. This can be achieved through activities aimed at raising awareness of the importance of potatoes and their economic, social, and environmental impacts on food security, nutrition, and ecosystem functions.

We would be delighted if you could also mark this special day on your calendar!
