2024 Miller Research Potato Pest Management Field Day Scheduled for August 21

Annual Event to Focus on Advanced Pest and Disease Management Strategies for Potato Cultivation

Miller Research is set to host its annual Potato Pest Management Field Day on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. This key event will take place at the Miller Research field site located near 250 N 350 E, Rupert, Idaho (42.65527 N, -113.59945 E). The field day promises a comprehensive agenda designed to address critical aspects of potato pest management. The event will kick off with a session on controlling powdery scab and Potato Mop-Top Virus (PMTV), followed by a series of focused presentations and demonstrations.

Participants will be divided into two groups to rotate through the following key stops:

  • In-Furrow Fungicides: Examination of fungicides used for managing Rhizoctonia canker and black scurf.
  • Alternatives to Metam Fumigation: Exploration of alternative methods for soil fumigation.
  • Effect of Seed Treatments: Analysis of seed treatments’ impact on blackleg and Fusarium dry rot.
  • Fungicide Programs: Strategies for controlling foliar diseases such as early blight, brown spot, white mold, and black dot, with an emphasis on managing fungicide resistance.
  • Managing Aerial Vine Rot: Approaches to controlling bacterial-induced aerial vine rot.
  • Disease Identification Quiz: An interactive quiz to test and enhance participants’ skills in disease identification.

The presentations will center on chemical management strategies for diseases and will feature research supported by the Pacific Northwest Potato Research Consortium. Attendees will have the opportunity to earn two ISDA pesticide recertification credits and two CCA Pest Management credits.

Lunch will be provided at the conclusion of the field day, offering an additional chance for networking and discussion among attendees.
