According to the regional Ministry of Agriculture, the current potato planting areas in the Kaliningrad region are sufficient to meet the population’s needs, and no further expansion is required. Officials emphasized that the choice of which crops to plant rests solely with farmers, based on market conditions and technical capabilities. Large agricultural holdings primarily focus on soybeans, rapeseed, and grain, while smaller farms specialize in vegetable growing, each requiring different equipment and cultivation technologies.
It is worth recalling that in the fall of 2025, regional Agriculture Minister Artem Ivanov reported a challenging harvest and winter sowing campaign due to waterlogged soil. The gross potato harvest fell by nearly 38%, and other vegetables also faced problems. Initially, Ivanov predicted that potatoes would need to be imported in 2026. However, by April 2026, the situation had improved: the need for seed potatoes and vegetables was 98% covered, with remaining supplies to come from other Russian regions. Additionally, a special state support measure has been introduced to compensate farmers for part of the costs of purchasing seeds, particularly those who suffered from last year’s emergency weather conditions.
