Japanese sweet potato is opening a new avenue for economic development in Son Tay Thuong commune, Quang Ngai province, Vietnam. After more than four months of pilot implementation in partnership with Tony Farm Da Lat, the model has delivered positive initial results, attracting many households to participate and expand their growing areas. In Mang He village, farmers are actively preparing land for new crops, learning planting and care techniques, and confidently investing in production on previously unproductive hilly land. Mr. Dinh Minh Ton, one of the first farmers to bring Japanese sweet potato varieties grown using tissue culture from Da Lat, has planted over one hectare. After more than four months of care, his field is thriving and ready for harvest, while he also supplies F1 seeds to many families in the village.
According to Tony Farm Da Lat, the climate and soil conditions in Son Tay Thuong are largely similar to those in the Central Highlands, creating favorable conditions for commercial cultivation of Japanese sweet potato. Based on preliminary results, this crop is expected to provide a stable income for the mountainous region’s residents. Beyond economic benefits, the model is also helping transform local production approaches and encouraging the adoption of technological advances in agricultural development.
