A new horizon for agricultural production in the region
The Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Ángel Manuel Manero Campos, announced an ambitious plan to position Huánuco as an exporting region of native potatoes, with access to key markets such as the United States, Europe and China. This announcement comes at a time when farmers have seen potato prices fall due to overproduction, affecting their profitability.
“We have come to bring definitive solutions, not partial ones. We are going to turn Huánuco into an exporting region of native potatoes to the world, and this process begins this year,” declared the minister, generating expectations among local producers.
Key measures to strengthen the sector
Minister Manero Campos detailed a series of actions that seek to boost agricultural production and guarantee better marketing of native potatoes:
– Boost to exports: Work will be done on commercial coordination to bring native potatoes to international markets with more competitive prices.
– Fortified potato production: The planting of iron-enriched varieties, developed by the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA), will be strengthened as part of the strategy to combat childhood anemia in the country.
– Better prices for farmers: With the expansion to new markets, the price of potatoes in the field could exceed S/ 1 per kilo, significantly improving the income of producers.
– Renovation of coffee plantations: Funds will be allocated to improve coffee production, one of the main crops in the region.
– Loans with affordable rates: Agrobanco will grant loans with an interest rate of 3.5% per year, facilitating the acquisition of machinery and the modernization of agricultural infrastructure.
Water infrastructure: a key step for agricultural development
One of the greatest challenges in the region is water management. To face this challenge, the Regional Government of Huánuco secured an investment of S/ 60 million for the construction of 32 irrigation canals, improving access to water resources and optimizing agricultural productivity.
Additionally, the minister announced the implementation of wells, reservoirs and sheds in the high Andean areas, guaranteeing water for the livestock sector and mitigating the impact of the drought.
“We are going to promote aggressive programs of wells, reservoirs and sheds so that Huánuco can develop an export activity. Peru will finally export beef this year, after having opened the market with China in 2023,” said Manero Campos.
A new marketing model for native potatoes
The price of potatoes in the field has reached S/ 0.20 per kilo, generating concern among producers. However, the Midagri strategy seeks to stabilize prices and guarantee more profitable markets.
Regional Governor Antonio Pulgar Lucas highlighted the importance of these measures and requested S/ 120 million in financing for irrigation projects. Although the approved amount was S/ 54 million, the Government’s commitment is to advance in the implementation of key infrastructure for the agricultural sector.
“Farmers should not lose hope, because an agricultural revolution is coming,” said Pulgar, confident that the announced measures will bring concrete benefits in the coming months.
Huánuco, on the way to becoming an agricultural benchmark
The strategies proposed for 2025 include the expansion of the cultivation of native and fortified potatoes, the renovation of coffee plantations and the implementation of modern agricultural infrastructure.
The commitment of Midagri to the development of Huánuco marks a new chapter for the production of native potatoes in Peru, with the expectation of consolidating the region as a benchmark in export and sustainable agroindustry.
