In Dingxi’s Anding District, known as China’s “Potato Capital,” farmers are embracing a new season with free high-quality seed potatoes. The Qinglan Mountain Township is distributing the high-yield “Qingshu No. 9” variety alongside expert guidance, helping farmers increase yields and secure better profits. This initiative highlights how targeted agricultural support can transform local economies and strengthen food security.
High-Quality Seeds Drive Agricultural Success
In mid-to-late April, as the critical potato planting season began, farmers in Anding District eagerly awaited their share of 146 tons of “Qingshu No. 9” seed potatoes. This variety, known for its high yield, disease resistance, and adaptability, is a game-changer for smallholder farmers.
Zhang Yanlin, a farmer from Shangping Village, received 500 kg of seeds and shared his optimism: “Last year, my 5 acres of potatoes earned me 6,000–7,000 yuan. Now, with 2 more acres and better seeds, I expect even higher profits.” His enthusiasm reflects a broader trend—where access to improved seeds directly boosts incomes.
A Sustainable Model for Rural Growth
Qinglan Mountain Township has adopted a “cooperative + large-scale farmers + smallholders” approach to expand potato production. By establishing dedicated planting bases, promoting high-quality seeds, and extending the supply chain, the region has turned potatoes into a lucrative cash crop.
This year’s “seeds to households, technology to fields” initiative ensures farmers not only receive free seeds but also technical training—enhancing productivity and sustainability. According to recent FAO data, improved potato varieties can increase yields by 30–50%, making such programs vital for food security and rural development.
Potatoes Pave the Way to Prosperity
The success of Anding’s potato industry demonstrates how government support, quality inputs, and farmer education can drive agricultural transformation. With potatoes now a key income source for local families, this model could inspire other regions to adopt similar strategies.
