Russia’s North-Western Interregional Directorate of Rosselkhoznadzor has prevented the import of a large shipment of Egyptian potatoes weighing 302 tons into St. Petersburg. During an inspection at the Big Sea Port, quarantine officials discovered a dangerous pathogen. Laboratory tests later confirmed the presence of the brown bacterial rot causative agent (Ralstonia solanacearum), a quarantinable organism that poses a serious threat to agriculture.
According to experts, the bacteria infiltrate the vascular system of plants, leading to wilting and eventual death. As a result of the findings, the Russian agricultural watchdog banned the entire shipment from entering the country, effectively blocking the contaminated produce from reaching the market.
